Spring Racing Fashion Etiquette | Our Top 5 Tips

At the very core of the race etiquette for ladies, and to a certain extent lads too is 3 words: sophistication, elegance and structure. It’s a strict code that has been passed down through the generations and it is not to be sniffed at. Despite what some think, the races is not a bar or club attached to the racetrack.

Let’s go through some basic rules…

Be mindful of your headpiece

While the races is one of your only opportunities to don something extravagant, bear in mind your fellow race goer, who might find themselves aggravated at the irritating view blocker that is perched on your head.

Yeah, how about no.

Much, much better.

It’s a marathon, not a sprint

The horses aren’t the only ones under performance pressure. Race day is truly an all-day event so sip alcohol throughout the day and always consume with food. Water should be your number one priority and drink of choice. Sounds like a buzz kill, but there is nothing worse than seeing a dehydrated sloppy drunk sans shoes making an exhibition of themselves.

What a mess! And not the hot kind.

Go easy on the fake tan

I know, I know…you’re coming out of hibernation, but the tandoori look is truly hideous. Avoid it at all costs.

Pay special attention your feet

They will be on display. See the above warning about the fake tan and take heed ladies! Stilettos and skyscraper heels sure look pretty, but aren’t suitable for all day wear and grass. Good news, the block heel is in!

Dress on the demure side

The midriff bearing crop, strapless, spaghetti strap dresses and shorts seem so easy and comfortable, and yes you can find some upmarket styles; however! Leave them at home. No buts! Mini’s have no place at the races, they never have! Pick either your décolletage or legs to show off – never both.

And lastly, if you can’t afford to lose the money – don’t bet.
