Trend Update | Skirts

You guys! Summer is almost over! We have today a skirt trend update for you to have a think on. Though the week has been a bit of a wet one, it’s worth thinking ahead for the inevitable sunshine days to come.

The New Pleat

Introducing the car wash. No, not sudsey version. We’ve seen the box and knife pleats for several seasons in various permutations. Now it’s time to take your cue from New York and Paris and make your next pleated venture a cut and slash number. Semi sheer underlays are a perfect way to flash your pins without giving too much away, and make sitting a little less awkward.

This style also translates well for the standard maxi skirt – which aren’t that cool in the peak summer heat if we’re quite honest – no airflow! This is this season’s 70’s fringing – let your legs feel the breeze!

The New Layer

It was bound to happen. As dresses and shirts become more oversized and long, skirts play with texture, sheer fabrics and cut-outs, it would not have been long before the two would be married together. A burgeoning trend on the catwalks is pairing a dress or tunic with a skirt over the top. We don’t recommend you apply this trend to a pant/short combo (nooooo!), but crack out some killer combinations with your existing pieces in your wardrobe. That season’s old chambray or hanky linen shirt dress can be rescued from the dud pile and brought back into rotation.

This trend is also the perfect opportunity to play with froth and hardware. Black is the perfect anchor to sheer. light laces. Nets and juxtaposing textures are your best friend in working this look!
